Passenger guide: documents and visas for popular destinations

Before you book a flight, check what documents you need for your destination. Here’s an overview of the entry requirements for the most popular destinations from Macedonia.

The European Union and the Schengen area

Macedonian citizens can travel to the EU and the Schengen area without a visa for stays of up to 90 days in any 180-day period. The condition is specific: the visa-free regime applies only to holders of a biometric passport (Regulation (EU) 2018/1806, Annex II). Macedonia has issued biometric passports since April 2007, so every valid Macedonian passport today is biometric — but on an older, non-biometric passport you need a visa for Schengen. Also check the remaining validity before travelling, since a rule on validity after the date of leaving the zone applies.

ETIAS — what it is and when it starts

ETIAS is not yet in effect. This is an online entry authorisation (not a visa) that will be required for short stays by passengers from visa-exempt countries, including Macedonia.

According to the official EU website, no start date has been announced yet: the EU will announce the specific date several months before it goes live. So there is no deadline you can plan around — and any site that is “accepting ETIAS applications” today, or charging for them, is doing so without basis, because the EU is not collecting any applications at this point.

When the system starts operating, the regulation provides for a six-month transitional period in which ETIAS is optional — a passenger who meets all other entry requirements will not be refused just for not having ETIAS. A further grace period follows before the obligation becomes full.

In practice: do not buy an “ETIAS” in advance and do not pay third parties. Check the current status on the EU’s official website before you travel.

Turkey

For tourist stays of up to 90 days, Macedonian citizens are not required to have a visa for Turkey. The travel document requirements — whether an ID card is sufficient and how much remaining passport validity is required — change and vary depending on the mode of entry, so check them before booking. Ask us or contact the Turkish embassy.

United Arab Emirates (Dubai, Abu Dhabi)

For the UAE, Macedonian citizens most often get a visa on arrival. The requirements — the length of the permitted stay and the required passport validity — change periodically, so confirm them before booking.

United States of America

A visa is required for the USA. The process includes:

Filling out the DS-160 form (online)
Scheduling an embassy interview
Paying the consular fee

The process can take several weeks — plan ahead.
